Angels Rumors: Halos Listed Among Potential Landing Spots for Free Agent Reliever

He could be a good addition to the pen.

The Angels are still looking to add to the bullpen before the beginning of the 2023 season. They've been heavily linked to former All-Star closer Zack Britton, as well as a few other left-handed relievers. However, the guys at Bleacher Report picked landing spots for the 10 best remaining free agents, and think the Angels would be a perfect match for RHP Matt Wisler.

"Wisler was sidelined for over a month last season with a neck strain. Further, his strikeouts-per-nine rate with the Rays plummeted from 11.0 in '21 to just 7.2 in '22. That tracked with a dip in his velocity.

"Still, how much Wisler truly needs velocity is subject for debate. He's basically had no use for his fastball in the last two seasons, instead going to his slider for more than 90 percent of his pitches. It remained effective in 2022, holding hitters to a .188 average.

"If not for high-leverage work in the late innings, such a pitcher can surely still be of great use in a middle-relief role. A handful of would-be contenders can still use one of those."

They linked Wisler to the Angels, Rangers and Cubs as potential landing spots, and it's easy to see the fit in Anaheim.

The Angels had one of the worst bullpens in baseball last year, and have struggled with consistency over the last few years. Their only major league addition thus far in the pen has been RHP Carlos Estevez, and he's hoping to get a chance to close. So they still need some help in middle and late relief, and that's where Wisler could thrive.

Last year, Wisler had a 2.25 ERA in 39 appearances. The year prior, he had a 2.15 ERA in 27 appearances. Clearly, he can still pitch, and do so at a pretty elite level. He would definitely be someone that could help the Halos in 20223.
