Angels Trade Outfield Prospect, Acquire Pitcher from Division Rival Astros

The Angels and Astros swapped prospects on Wednesday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Angels announce a trade with the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon.

Los Angeles is sending infielder Trey Cabbage to Houston in exchange for right-handed pitcher Carlos Espinosa.

Cabbage was a fourth-round draft pick by Minnesota in 2015 and made his Major League debut with the Angels in 2023. He had been designated for assignment Saturday to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Matt Moore.

In 22 games last season, Cabbage batted .208 in 53 at-bats. He slugged .321 with three doubles, one home run, and drove in seven runs. MLB Pipeline ranked him as the Angels' number-26 prospect a year ago.

Espinosa 22, was signed by the Astros as an international free agent in 2022. He spent 2023 with Low-A Fayetteville and the Astros' Florida Complex League.

The Cuban was a combined 4-5 with a 4.29 ERA in 15 games (seven starts) across the two levels last season. The Astros originally signed him to a $450,000 bonus after Espinosa defected from Cuba.
