Former Angels Pitcher Signs With AL West Rival

Former Halo reliever signs a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to spring training.

A former Los Angeles Angels reliever is remaining in the AL West but with another Halo rival.

Former Halos righty reliever Ty Buttery announced via his personal Twitter/X that he had signed a deal with the Seattle Mariners.

The 30-year-old spent three seasons in Los Angeles donning the red and white from 2018 to 2020. Buttrey put up solid numbers in those three seasons, recording a 4.30 ERA, 122 strikeouts, 106 ERA+, 3.56 FIP, and a 1.29 WHIP in 115 innings pitched and 115 games.

Buttrey has had an interesting journey since throwing his final major league pitch. He abruptly retired at age 28 in the middle of spring training in 2021. The next year, he changed his mind and attempted a comeback. Buttrey reworked his mechanics, signed a minor league contract, and made it into 34 games with the Angels' Triple-A affiliate in 2022.

But he never got a shot with the Halos big team again, as he elected for free agency after the 2022 season. In 2023, he signed with the Houston Astros on a minor-league deal but was ultimately released by the team on Aug. 1.

More recently, Buttrey appeared in 20 games in the Dominican Winter League, allowing 19 runs (16 earned) in 19 innings for Leones del Escogido. He then spent a brief time in the Puerto Rican Winter League, appearing in two games with Criollos de Caguas.

Buttrey will now do his best to make his way back to the majors, this time via the Mariners' minor league system. His contract includes a non-roster invitation to spring training. Perhaps Buttrey’s time in the American League West isn't up yet.
