Job posted for General Manager of Atlanta's AA affiliate that's moving to Columbus, Georgia
The Atlanta Braves, in conjunction with minor league team owner Diamond Baseball Holdings, announced earlier this month that their AA affiliate, currently located in Pearl, Mississippi, is relocating to Columbus, GA for the 2025 season.
And if you've ever wanted to run a minor league baseball team, have we got some good news for you!
Diamond Baseball Holdings has listed a General Manager job posting for the AA affiliate on their website, with the job description explaining why their chosen candidate needs to be in place rather early in the relocation process, to help set up the working structure of the new team.
In the posting, DBH is looking for an experienced "strong Assistant General Manager or General Manager" with proven experience in both management and ticket sales. In the qualifications, they specify that applicants need to be able to demonstrate "major" proficiency in sales and marketing, with ballpark management being classified a "minor" in the same context as a collegiate minor being a secondary focus of study.
Ideally, the chosen candidate has five to seven years in their prior roles with another minor league affiliate, with the most important attributes listed as sponsorship and ticketing sales experience, recruiting experience, and familiarity with computerized ticketing systems.
That last point seems to be rather important, as the chosen candidate appears to be the driving force behind deciding which company and/or vendor the newly-relocated affiliate will be partnering with for their ticketing logistics, amongst other systems that will be decided on by the chosen candidate.
As you continue to read the listing, it's clear that there's not actually that many baseball-related decisions, outside of ballpark management, to be made by the General Manager. And that makes sense, if you think about it: the players on the roster and most other baseball decisions will be governed by the Atlanta Braves, who select the players via the draft and free agency and are the final decision-makers of any player movement between levels of the minor-league system.
So a General Manager job in the minor leagues is (obviously) significantly different that what Alex Anthopoulos is doing in Atlanta as president of baseball operations for the team.
Instead, strong business acumen makes sense as a desired trait for the chosen General Manager, as the economic viability of the affiliate is largely driven by their total attendance, sponsorships, and in-ballpark sales for both concessions.
And if you think that you've got the skills needed to drive Atlanta's relocated affiliate to financial success, the job posting is available on the Diamond Baseball Holdings website.
