WATCH: Spencer Strider blows away Shohei Ohtani for 200th strikeout of the year
With the trade deadline now done and dusted, it's time to get back out there and play. And just like last night, it's a hot matchup at Truist Park with Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels in town. Both the Japanese two-way phenom and Braves fireballer Spencer Strider made the All-Star Game this season, but they didn't face each other as Strider sat the contest out. But they locked horns tonight, and Spencer made some history in the process.
Eschewing the heater and the wipeout slider, the Atlanta righty went to his third pitch, the change-up, to get strike three. That's Strider's 200th K this season, which comfortably leads baseball, and he recorded it in 123.1 innings. That breaks Strider's own record of fastest in history to record 200 strikeouts in a season, which he of course set last season when he did it in 131 innings.
Aside from the K, Strider battled with his command a bit in the first, walking the hitters before and after Ohtani, but a double-play ball off the bat of Mike Moustakas ended the inning. The game is scoreless in the early going.
The game broadcast, with Voice of the Braves Brandon Gaudin, is available inside Braves Country on Bally Sports South and is available on MLB.TV outside of the broadcast area. The radio call, with Ben Ingram, is available locally on 680 AM/93.7 FM The Fan or outside the Atlanta market on the Atlanta Braves Radio Network or MLB.com.
