Chicago Cubs Extend Mind-Blowing Home Run Trend

The Chicago Cubs rebounded from a horrific loss against the San Diego Padres on Monday with a relatively easy win on Tuesday. The Cubs prevailed 5-1 at Petco Park, scoring all five of their runs via the long ball.

Yan Gomes started the fifth inning with a solo shot off Joe Musgrove -- the first run scored by either team. That was just an appetizer for Christopher Morel, though, who homered off Stephen Kolek with the bases loaded later in the frame to give his team a five-run lead.

It was Morel's first career grand slam and the team's first grand slam of the season. Incredibly, Chicago's last 17 grand slams have all been hit by different players. See how many names are recognizable from the list below.

Before Morel, Gomes was actually the most recent Cubs player with a grand slam, which is surprising given that he's only hit 19 home runs with Chicago.

Beyond him, the list is a true mixed bag.

There are some recognizable names like Cody Bellinger, Ian Happ, Nico Hoerner and Willson Contreras, but also some remarkably random ones like P.J. Higgins, Alfonso Rivas and Nelson Velazquez.

Part of the reason is that the Cubs have experienced significant roster churn over the past few seasons after moving on from their 2016 championship core. They haven't had a lot of lineup mainstays recently.

Another explanation is that baseball is just highly random. With so many games, pitches and players every year, weird things are bound to happen.

Either way, Morel was able to add his name to that list in style as Chicago earned a much-needed victory.
