Astros Designate Former Dodgers Pitcher for Assignment
The Houston Astros have designated former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Wander Suero for assignment. This was made as a move for the 40-man roster, given that the team activated reliever Joel Kuhnel.
The veteran pitcher signed with Houston this offseason on a minor-league deal. He made five appearances for the Astros Triple-A squad, posting an ERA of 3.60 over five innings.
Suero, 32, spent the 2023 season with the Dodgers, appearing in just five games. He didn't perform very well during his limited time with the organization, posting an ERA of 7.88 in eight innings of work.
Before joining the Dodgers, Suero spent four seasons with the Washington Nationals. He was part of the 2019 Nationals team that took down the Dodgers in the NLDS on their way to winning the World Series.
His best career year came in 2020 when he put up an ERA of 3.80 over 23.2 innings of work. He appeared in 22 games for the Nationals that year.
Suero could head back to Sugar Land to rejoin the Astros Triple-A team if he clears waivers. The right-hander holds a career record of 15-14 and an ERA of 4.75 over 193.1 innings pitched.
