Dodgers Rumors: Writer Lays Out Potential Julio Urias Contract Extension This Offseason

Julio Urías had a poor first half of the 2023 season, including an IL stint for a strained hamstring. Aside from a poor start against the Baltimore Orioles, however, Urías has had a strong second half.

Urías has been pitching with a split nail on his left middle finger, which is painful and interferes with throwing his breaking pitches. However, he's still dominated as of late, and is in the midst of a 14 scoreless inning streak.

MLB insider Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report predicts Urías will re-sign with the Dodgers for $105 million 5 years.

While this would be a nice deal for LA, it's unlikely he accepts a deal like this even in a down year.

Urías is represented by Scott Boras. Yes, Urías would be a great signing for the Dodgers, and is comfortable in LA.

And yes, his velocity has decreased this season and he has had trouble adjusting to the pitch clock. Before Tuesday’s start against the Diamondbacks when Urías was brilliant for six scoreless innings, he made 16 starts and pitched 82.1 innings. His 4.69 ERA isn’t good, but he had 82 strikeouts and 20 walks. He has been giving up home runs at an alarming rate.

However, there is a shortage of quality starters on the market this year, and the Dodgers' ace has proven to be one of them.

Urías was on the mound when the Dodgers clinched the 2020 world championship. In 2022, he was a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award.

Boras prides himself on getting money for his clients. At 27, Urías is entering his prime. All teams want quality starters. While it would be nice if Urías returns to the Dodgers, it is unlikely. The Dodgers’ brass doesn’t like to negotiate with Boras.
