Cleveland Guardians 2023 Top 50 Prospects, No. 39 OF Joe Lampe
As the future of the organization prepares for a new year and spring training to begin, there’s no better time to bring you the Cleveland Baseball Insiders top 50 prospects for the upcoming 2023 season.
The Guardians are widely regarded as having one of the deepest and top farm systems in all of baseball. So deep, in fact, that it was very difficult to trim the list down to just 50 players I think could have an impact at the MLB level. I probably could easily have ended up listing 75 or more players.
I am implementing the Fangraphs future value grading scale which you will be able to locate under each player video. Future Value is a grade on the 20-80 scale that maps to anticipated annual WAR production during the player’s first six years of service.
My rankings are based off seeing the players live, watching video and having conversations with other evaluators and writers. While prospect lists are fun and entertaining for fans, they are not an end-all-be-all in terms of who make it eventually to the major leagues. Remember, Jose Ramirez was never a top 100 prospect nationally and Oscar Gonzalez wasn't even a top 20 prospect in the Guardians organization.
The ultimate goal here is to inform our readers and give you information on some of the young talent in the organization that they can follow and look forward to seeing in the future at the MLB level.
No. 39 Joe Lampe - OF
2022 Stats
Bio
Over two seasons at Arizona State Lampe slashed .321/.389/.537 with 15 home runs and 68 RBI. In 2022 the redshirt sophomore earned Perfect Game Third-Team All-American honors after batting .340 with 37 extra-base hits and 41 RBI. Lampe’s 17 stolen bases this season ranked 4th in the Pac-12. After the season he was selected by the Guardians in the 3rd round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
2022 Season
Lampe was assigned to Low-A Lynchburg late into the 2022 season after being drafted but only appeared in three games. The organization let Lampe get his feet wet and a taste of pro-ball. Though he struggled striking out six times in his 11 plate appearances there really isn't much to take away from his performance with such a small sample size. He was able to collect his first professional hit on the first pitch he ever saw to start his career.
Scouting Report
Lampe has great zone awareness along with advanced bat-to-ball skills and could profile as a top of the order bat that makes contact and avoids strikeouts. Known more for his speed than power he did show more pop in his 2022 season at Arizona State putting up 12 home runs and 37 extra base hits. His home run total was four times more than his prior season.
Lampe's speed is a real asset not only in the outfield but on the bases as well. Some scouts have him graded out at 70 grade on a 80 grade scale. He swiped 17 bases his last season at Arizona State and even scored on a sacrifice fly from second base in a game.
On defensive Lampe's speed and athleticism along with his glovework should be enough to keep him in center field but he has a strong arm as well that make him an asset in both corners of the outfield as well.
2023 and Future Outlook
Lampe should start the 2023 season at High-A Lake County despite playing in only three games with Low-A Lynchburg at the end of the 2022 season. There is a chance he could still be assigned back to Lynchburg but being a collegiate drafted advanced bat, I find that chance slim.
His current ceiling is that of a potential MLB regular in center field especially if he can continue to increase his walk rate and power production at the plate. His floor is that of a fourth outfielder.
