Mets Hitting Coach Calls Out Entire Team Amid Concerning Start

The start of the year for the New York Mets has been a disaster, starting 0-4 and struggling to get anything going offensively. After a 5-0 loss against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night, concerns are already at a high point in the early stage of the season.

For the Mets, expectations were lower this season than they were heading into last year. This team isn’t as talented as it was a season ago and while the struggles were expected, this is as bad of a start as New York could’ve had.

In three of the first four games, the Mets have scored one run twice and were shutout in their last contest. Much of the lineup is struggling, sitting near the bottom in most major offensive categories.

After the shutout loss, hitting coach Eric Chavez had some interesting things to say according to Dan Martin of The New York Post. 

“I’m not looking at individuals, I’m looking at it as a whole unit. I’m more concerned about the team approach, the team attack and stacking up good, quality at-bats.”

Despite playing just four games, the concerns are warranted.

The at-bats have been horrible for New York, with multiple players striking out at an alarming rate. Francisco Lindor is slashing .063/.167/.063 with three strikeouts in 16 at-bats, a key factor in the team's .188 batting average.

Brandon Nimmo has been just as bad, slashing .063/.167/.063 with five strikeouts.

It’s early and things can always chance, but this Mets offense has been a tough watch and will need to change in the near future if they want to find any success this season.

They’ll have an opportunity to put runs on the board on Tuesday night against Casey Mize, who missed the entire 2023 season with an injury.
