Padres News: Bob Melvin Praises Ha-Seong Kim for ‘Gold Glove’ Defense
Since Ha-Seong Kim came to the major leagues in 2021, his defense has been elite. His manager Bob Melvin recognized his second baseman’s defensive excellence, especially at any position he's placed in.
“You could probably give him a couple of days in the outfield and he’d do the same thing,” Melvin said. “He’s just a terrific defender and has great instincts. I mean, you see the plays at third base when you’re not out there that often. Sometimes depth perception is a little different, when to back up, when to go get them. He’s just unique in the fact that he has great instincts. He’s got great hands. He’s got great quickness. You know, one of the best defenders in the game and his work this year would suggest it’s Gold Glove work. So wherever we put him, he responds.”
This season, Kim has put together his best offensive year as he is hitting .280 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, and a .812 OPS. His defense has helped the Padres have the fourth best defense in the major leagues, and Kim has helped his pitchers have National League's best pitching.
Next year, shortstop Xander Bogaerts might be playing at other positions enabling Kim to play shortstop again, where he was a Gold Glove finalist last season.
Watching Kim play shortstop is special. In baseball, most people overlook the importance of defense, and it is nice to see Melvin appreciate Kim for what he's able to do. While the Padres have performed below lofty expectations and early season predictions, Kim hasn’t, and it can be argued that he is the team’s MVP.
