Padres News: Bob Melvin Sums Up Friars Rough Day in Philly in Just 5 Words
The Padres start to the second half has started just as bad as they ended the first half. In the team's first game back they were able to pull out a win in Philadelphia, but fortunes changed on Saturday.
In a day-night doubleheader against the Phillies, the Friars dropped both games 6-4 and 9-4.
While talking to the San Diego Tribune, Manager Bob Melvin was able to wrap up the entire day in just one quick sentence.
“This was a miserable day,” Bob Melvin said.
The main story of the day was Fernando Tatis Jr. rolling his ankle chasing after ball. The Padres star player, played a couple more innings, but had to be removed form the game.
He was also seen walking with a limp after the game.
The day did not get better as the Padres were unable to capitalize on late leads in both games.
In the first game, the Friars held a 3-0 and 4-3 lead but it all went to waste as the bullpen gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
In the second game, Ryan Weathers had a rough start as he allowed four runs in four innings. The Padres were unable to keep the game close once the Phillies were up by 4-1.
Overall, Melvin said that Saturday's doubleheader encapsulates the season as a whole. The Padres have been unable to close out games by shooting themselves in the foot.
“We’ve talked about timing this year a bunch,” Melvin said between games. “Our timing isn’t great right now. A lot of good things happened and a lot of bad things happened.”
The Padres will look to get the series split against the Phillies on Sunday before the team continue its road trip in Toronto.
