As the San Diego Padres continue their frustrating season, it’s easy to start pointing fingers at what went wrong. But in reality, it’s a mixture of different things that caused the issues this season.

However, don’t tell All-Star third baseman Manny Machado that. As one of the leaders of the Friars, he is taking a lot of the blame for what has gone wrong this season.

“Maybe at a different time, at the end of the year, it might be a different conversation,” he had finally said after several minutes of mostly not answering questions. “But right now we’ve got a chance. And until we’re out, we’re gonna keep fighting. I’m gonna keep fighting. And I gotta play better baseball.”

The Friars season has likely caused everyone on the roster to second-guess themselves. It has been a very tough year for everyone involved, and it seems that things are starting to come to a head.

Machado knows that he could have played better this season. Especially after he got a massive payday prior to the start of the year.

“Ultimately, we haven’t gotten to where we need to, and God’s honest truth, I haven’t played to my capabilities. I haven’t been good. So, I mean, a lot of it is probably my fault. But we’re gonna keep fighting no matter what.”

They put themselves into this deep hole and now have to figure a way out. It won’t be easy, and at this point, getting to the postseason does seem like a long shot. But it is possible.

This team won’t give up, it’s just not who they are. With only a little over a month left in the season, the clock is ticking on the season for San Diego. They don’t have any time or games to waste down the stretch of the season.
