Former Phillies Starting Pitcher Being Targeted By Los Angeles Angels
There aren't many major moves out there the Philadelphia Phillies can make that would completely change the outlook of their roster.
Outside of getting Jordan Montgomery locked into a short-term deal, what the front office is primarily targeting are depth pieces who can be used to give their established players a rest, and can be brought in if there are injuries.
Depth will always be important for teams embarking on a 162-game season as multiple reasons can cause the roster to be overhauled at some point during the year.
That's why it was kind of surprising when the Phillies had no interest in bringing back Michael Lorenzen, whom they acquired at the trade deadline last season.
The right-hander is looking to be a starting pitcher, something he transitioned to with the Los Angeles Angels in 2022, before he earned his first All-Star selection with the Detroit Tigers during the front half of 2023.
Philadelphia can't promise Lorenzen a rotation spot, and based on how he performed late in the year, they can't necessarily rely on him either.
So, the 32-year-old continues to be a free agent after putting together his best professional season as a starter.
However, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, it seems like that could change soon. The Angels are reportedly eyeing a reunion with Lorenzen for him to become one of their back-end starting pitchers.
The righty is a Southern California native and could be interested in returning to play in his local area.
After all, Lorenzen was given his first starting opportunity since his rookie year with Los Angeles.
The Phillies will seemingly continue searching the open market for value as they hope some of the best players available decide to take a short-term deal.
