Phillies Agree to Contract With Star Lefty to Avoid Arbitration

The Philadelphia Phillies and Rangers Suarez avoided arbitration as they agreed to a $5.05 million salary for the 2024 season. Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported the news on Suarez.

The left-handed pitcher has found success during his time with the Phillies, posting a 3.41 ERA in his six-year career. The 2021 season was the best of his young career, showing off an impressive 1.36 ERA across 106 innings. Suarez then turned to a full-time starter in the 2022 season where he had a 3.65 ERA.

The 2023 season was the worst statistical season of his career when it comes to ERA. He posted a 4.18 ERA in 22 starts. However, his 3.90 FIP was just .03 higher than his impressive 2022 season.

Suarez is a solid No. 3-5 in their rotation and should be featured in those slots for a Philadelphia team looking to make it back to the World Series in 2024.

The Phillies have more than enough talent to get the job done and adding cheap arms like Suarez will certainly help their chances.

The lefty has also been a major performer during the postseason, recording a career ERA of 1.62 across seven starts and nine appearances.

There have been rumors Philadelphia is interested in potentially adding another arm before the season starts. There are big names available on the trade and free agent markets that the front office could be interested in to bolster an already impressive rotation.

Pitching remains the key for World Series contending teams similar to the Phillies.

Gelb also reported Jeff Hoffman agreed to a $2.2 million salary for 2024 to avoid arbitration.

Philadelphia still has three arbitration-eligible players in Alec Bohm, Gregory Soto, and Edmundo Sosa.
