Red Sox Reportedly Pursued Ex-Yankees All-Star In Free Agency Before He Signed Elsewhere

The Boston Red Sox are leaving no stone unturned this offseason.
Boston needs to improve the starting rotation and has been linked to every top-of-the-rotation starter available. It's unclear exactly who the Red Sox will land, but it does sound like the club will nab at least one this offseason.
The Red Sox aren't just looking for top-tier starters but also depth hurlers with upside. One of these hurlers the club reportedly has pursued is former New York Yankees and current New York Mets starter Luis Severino, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.
"The Red Sox have made clear their desire to add pitching this winter and have been tied to several starters this offseason including top-of-the-market targets (Yoshinobu Yamamoto) and Jordan Montgomery," McCaffrey said. "(Craig Breslow) reportedly met with Montgomery's agent Scott Boras in Arizona last month at the general managers meetings and a team source indicated that at this point the Red Sox have has talks with agents of all of the top free-agent starters and know what their markets look like.
"According to a second league source, one of those starters was right-handed Luis Severino. The Red Sox were interested in the free-agent starter and had a Zoom call with him recently, but never got to the point of negotiating a deal. Severino signed last week with the Mets for one year and $13 million."
Severino would've been an intriguing fit. At one point he was one of the most dominant starters in the American League. Injuries have derailed his career over the last few seasons, but he is just 29 years old and has plenty of upside.
The big righty struggled last season, but logged a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts in 2022 and has a career 3.79 ERA in eight seasons.
