Jonathan India Drawing Trade Interest at MLB General Manager Meetings
After the unexpected success of the 2023 season, Reds fans will be closely monitoring every move the club makes this offseason.
Declining Joey Votto's team option was the first major domino to fall, and Reds GM Nick Krall issued a statement thanking Votto for his contributions over the course of his 17-year career in Cincinnati. Now, Krall is navigating what to do with another fan favorite: Jonathan India.
The Reds second baseman is drawing trade interest from other clubs according to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi. Morosi said that the Reds would listen to offers for India, but value him highly and are not motivated to move him.
"India is a popular name among execs at the MLB GM Meetings. Multiple teams have inquired to the Reds about his availability," Morosi tweeted. "Reds will listen to offers due to their position-player depth, but they value India highly and aren't motivated to move him."
India's role with the team could change after multiple rookies had breakout seasons, including Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Noelvi Marte, and Spencer Steer. That group is the presumed starting infield, with Steer potentially moving to left field on Opening Day.
That leaves India as the potential odd man out. Could he move to the outfield? Would Manager David Bell use him as a frequent designated hitter? Would trading him help Krall acquire players at positions of need like outfield, starting pitchers or relievers?
Krall notably said he had no regrets about staying quiet at the trade deadline in August. Now with the offseason in full swing, calls about India and deciding what to do with him are among the long list of questions waiting to be answered.
