Should Cincinnati Reds Make This Trade for Dylan Cease?

The Reds have been linked to a number of starting pitchers so far this offseason and reports continue to ramp up during the MLB Winter Meetings.

Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease is on the Reds' radar. The 27-year-old finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 2022, but is coming off a bit of a down year.

Advanced statistics would suggest that Cease was much better than the 7-9 record and 4.58 earned run average he posted last season. And with two years of team control left, the asking price for his services is reportedly very high.

Bruce Levine of 670 the Score has confirmed a recent report from the Cincinnati Enquirer's Gordon Wittenmeyer that the Reds and White Sox have indeed had discussions about a deal that would bring Cease to Cincinnati.

Expounding upon that report, Levine has heard some of the names that are on Chicago's wish list. The two headliners are Rhett Lowder and Chase Petty.

The Reds took Lowder in the first round (No. 7 overall) in the 2023 MLB Draft. He's currently listed as Cincinnati's No. 2 prospect according to MLB.com.

Petty is the Reds' sixth best prospect according to MLB.com. He was acquired by Cincinnati in the deal that sent Sonny Gray to Minnesota. Petty started 18 games last year between Dayton and Chattanooga, and posted a 1.72 earned run average with 66 strikeouts.

As if the price wasn't high enough, Levine says the White Sox are also asking for the Reds No. 9 and No. 11 position prospects in catcher Alfredo Duno and outfielder Jay Allen II.

There have been no reports that indicate any deal between the Reds and White Sox is imminent. Check out Levine's tweet about trade talks below:
