Sixers Star Offers Honest Thoughts on Melton’s Return vs. Pistons
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid discusses the return of his veteran teammate, De'Anthony Melton.
The Philadelphia 76ers are getting healthier. One week after getting Joel Embiid back in the mix, the Sixers trotted out the veteran guard De’Anthony Melton for the first time in months.
Since the start of 2024, Melton has been battling a back injury. While he returned to action after missing three games initially, his return would last two outings before he went on a multi-week recovery period.
Melton was under the impression he was back for the long-haul in late February, but his return would last three games. During a February 27 matchup against the Boston Celtics, Melton left early with back spasms. That fired up another long layover.
After 21 games, Melton finally made his way back out on the floor this week. As expected, the veteran guard saw a limited role off the bench. All things considered, Sixers center Joel Embiid thought the return of the veteran guard was a good sign for a potential upcoming playoff run, even if the brutally honest Embiid didn’t think he saw the best version of his teammate on Tuesday.
“He was great… He sucked today, but it was great to have him,” Embiid said jokingly, while smiling.
Melton hit a three just moments into his return. That make would be just one of two on Tuesday, as Melton shot 2-9 from the field. He scored five points, and produced three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Considering Melton has just five appearances since the new year, the Sixers understand he’s climbing an uphill battle as the season reaches the final week. Melton might not have the same role he started with when the games count for more, but Embiid looks forward to having the two-way standout around.
“He’s gonna be a big piece,” Embiid finished. “As we’re getting healthy. He adds shot-making ability, defense, a little bit of playmaking, too. Another guard. I think he’s gonna help us a lot.”
