76ers vs. Celtics Prediction, Injuries & Game 5 Odds: NBA Playoffs, 5/9
After a thrilling Game 4 between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers where James Harden’s clutch, game-winning three-pointer in overtime sent the Wells Fargo Center into a frenzy, we now find this Eastern Conference Semifinal series knotted at two games apiece heading back to Boston.
Though Harden’s shot only put the 76ers up one point with 20 seconds remaining, Marcus Smart’s sunk shot at the buzzer would be deemed no good after not getting it off in time. Hanging on to win 116-115 on the backs of superstars James Harden and Joel Embiid the 76ers have regained plenty of life, so how will the Celtics respond?

Injury Reports for Both Sides Entering Game 5
With Joel Embiid posting back-to-back 30+ point double-doubles in Game 3 and 4 of this series, the LCL sprain in his right knee might still be plaguing him, but he sure is fighting through it and minimizing the impact of the injury. With Embiid back and playing in MVP form, the 76ers are currently injury-free heading to Game 5, according to ESPN’s injury report.
The Celtics are also practically at full health with Jayeln Brown playing with a facemask. Danilo Gallinari is the only player to be listed on the Celtics’ injury report ahead of Game 5, and he is a game-time decision for the first time this year after tearing his ACL about eight months ago while playing in Italy.
He does not figure to see much action when back at this juncture in the season after suffering such a major injury.
We just hope no injuries pop up in any of the remaining games of this fantastic series. With these rivals basically at their best, we expect fireworks the rest of the way. Basketball fireworks often come with lots of scoring, which is where we are headed with our top 76ers vs. Celtics prediction for Game 5.
Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics Game 5 Predictions
The best bet and top 76ers vs. Celtics prediction for Game 5 is for the game total score to go over 214 points, which has -108 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. Let’s dive into why that is, shall we?
Game 5 tips off at 7:30 PM ET at TD Garden in Boston, MA. After splitting the first two games in Boston and the next two in Philly, Game 5, Game 6 and a potential Game 7 now follow a 1-1-1 format, bouncing back and forth to each city.
With two terrific defenses in this matchup, it’s not hard to see why the total is so low. In fact, this game total is 14 points lower than this game’s Tuesday night counterpart between the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets.
It took overtime and 76 points between Harden and Embiid to help the 76ers crack the Game 4 over, while a balanced attack from the Cetlics and overtime got Boston there. Still, it is the third time in four tries this series where the game total surpassed 214 points.
The only time this series saw a game go under 214 points was Game 2 when Embiid returned and was hobbled and the 76ers were completely out of sorts with Harden struggling. They only managed to put up 87 points in a blowout loss.
With Harden and Embiid now firing and Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris ready to be a key third cog at any time, the 76ers seem like they are about to roll on offense.
On the Celtics side, there are just so many threats at all times. With Jayson Tatum and Jaleyn Brown leading the charge, these two can go for 35 or 40 in any game. With Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, Al Horford and Derrick White providing complimentary scoring, the Celtics are always a tough group to quiet.
With the Celtics lack of frontcourt size and physicality, allowing an improving Embiid to feast, and a lack of quality depth and wing defense for the 76ers, these two team’s weaknesses on defense, play squarely into each strengths.

76ers vs. Celtics Best Bets & Player Prop Picks for Game 5 Including Tyrese Maxey & Al Horford
Aside from our top 76ers vs. Celtics prediction concerning the game total over, we have some player prop best bets to consider from some of the supporting cast pieces.
For the 76ers, Maxey is a player we are targeting. After an impressive Game 1 performance where he poured in 26 points, four steals and two assists, his efficiency and overall production has been declining as the series has gone on. Maxey really struggled to shoot the ball these last two games in Philly, hitting at just a 35% clip or worse in both. He has, however, been getting rebounds, recording six in Game 3 and eight in Game 4.
Unfortunately for Celtics fans, we expect him to start finding a groove again in Game 5 back in Boston. Harden went off in Game 4, so the Celtics will be aiming to slow him in Game 5. This should open things back up for a 20 points per game scorer in Maxey, who’s line for player points in this game has dipped to 18.5.
We like Maxey to go over 18.5 points at -115 odds at FanDuel. If you agree with this 76ers vs. Celtics prediction, you can click here to sign up at FanDuel place a qualifying $5 bet on this prop.
For the Celtics, we will target Al Horford. With inconsistency scoring the ball this series and being a fourth or fifth option on this team, we will avoid Horford’s points prop on it’s own. However, just as he did in Game 4, he is more than capable of stuffing the stat sheet in other ways. And his points + assists is something we really like.
Set at just 11.5 for Game 5 at -113 odds on the over, Horford just needs a sum of 12 points and assists for this bet to cash. In three of the four games this series, Horford has had no problem hitting this mark. On the season, he averages 11.8 points + assists, so this mark is also below his average.
With Embiid regaining strength and getting back to being a force inside, Horford will have to continue being a quality playmaker and willing passer. With his three-point shooting ability, he will need to take Embiid and other 76ers bigs outside and knock down his looks from beyond the arc, and he can.
