The NBA has issued Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas a $40,000 fine for using derogatory and disparaging language during a live television interview.

Thomas made his comments during an on-court interview at the conclusion of the Nets' 116-105 win over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night at Barclays Center.

The guard was interviewed by TNT alongside new teammate Spencer Dinwiddie. Shortly after the interview, Thomas took to Twitter to apologize for his remark.

"I want to apologize for the insensitive word I used in the post-game interview. I was excited about the win and was being playful. I definitely didn't intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did," he tweeted. "My apologies again. Much love."

The 21-year-old guard ended the home win with 20 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four turnovers in 33 minutes. A heavy majority of his 20-point outing came at the free throw line, going a perfect 13-of-13. He shot a woeful 3-of-16 from the field and 1-of-6 from behind the 3-point line.

Thomas has seen an increased role since the organization traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster on Sunday afternoon. Across his last five games, the guard is posting averages of 34.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 3.0 turnovers in 32.8 minutes per game.

In that span, he became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40+ points in three straight games (21 years, 117 days). That also included him becoming the first player in Nets franchise history to score 40+ points in three straight games.

Brooklyn returns to action on Saturday night when the team hosts former superstar James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers. The game is slated to tip at 6:00 p.m. ET. The contest marks Harden's first time playing at Barclays Center since being traded during last year's deadline.
