The Denver Nuggets defeated the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night, but Victor Wembanyama turned in a historic performance. Finishing the night with 23 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, and 9 blocked shots, Wembanyama became the third player in NBA history to achieve that line in a game or better, and also became the only rookie to do it (per Basketball Reference's StatHead).
Asked about an interaction he had with Wembanyama during the game, Nuggets star Nikola Jokic went viral, saying, "I told him if you block one more shot, I'm gonna - something. But he blocked like four after that, so I didn't do anything about it."
Jokic has a unique ability to keep his postgame media sessions lighthearted, and even laugh at himself a bit. While Wembanyama and the Spurs have a lot of work to do in order to reach the success that Jokic and the Nuggets are having, this is a Western Conference battle that should be a lot of fun to watch for the next several years.
Denver walked away with a win in this game, but it certainly was not easy. Behind Wembanyama's historic game, the Spurs pushed Denver to the very end, but just did not have enough to finish the job. This was a solid win for the Nuggets, even despite San Antonio's poor record.
