Detroit Pistons Legend Expected to be Hall of Fame Bound
A Detroit Pistons legend is expected to be on his way to the hoops Hall of Fame.
On Wednesday afternoon, it was reported that a Detroit Pistons legend from the 2000s is on his way to the Hall of Fame. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, reported Vince Carter and Chauncey Billups have been named to the 2024 class. An official announcement is set to be made later this week.
Billups’ time with the Pistons began in 2002 when he signed as a free agent. He blossomed into an All-Star talent with Detroit and was part of one of the best teams in franchise history.
Four of five Billups’ All-Star nominations came during his Pistons tenure. Across eight seasons, he’d average 16.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 6.2 APG and 1.0 SPG. Detroit ended up trading Billups to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson in 2009. However, the star guard would end up coming back to the Pistons in 2014 for the final run of his career.
During his second season in Detroit, Billups helped deliver the Pistons a championship. He averaged 16.4 PPG and 5.9 APG during those playoffs and was named Finals MVP following the victory over the LA Lakers.
Billups finished his career with a list of accolades that includes being a five-time All-Star, three-time All-NBA, and two-time All-Defense. His career averages sit at 15.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 5.4 APG.
As far as the all-time ranks go, Billups is fourth in Pistons history in assists, second in three-pointers made, and first in free-throw percentage.
Following his retirement, Billups broke into the world of coaching. He’s been coach of the Portland Trail Blazers for three years now and has a 79-160 record.
