Pistons Come Up Just Short Against New York

The Pistons kept the game agains the Knicks close all afternoon but could never get over the hump.

After falling behind the Knicks by 21 in the first half, Detroit clawed back into the game and kept it close all afternoon before ultimately falling 104-102. Rookie sensation Cade Cunningham had the ball in his hands on the game's final possession but veteran Alec Burks reached in and knocked the ball away as Cunningham went up for the jumper and time expired.

After digging such a big hole early in the game, Detroit just couldn't climb out. Cunningham was solid with 18 points and 7 assists (zero rebounds, however) as was Saddiq Bey who finished with 14 points. Isaiah Stewart had a very nice game as well as he recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). The player of the game today, though was Marvin Bagley III. Motown Marvin got the start in palce of injured Jerami Grant and poured in 27 points while grabbing seven boards. Bagley getting it done in the starting lineup is likely a preview of things to come.

For the visiting Knicks it was RJ Barrett, Julius Randle, Immanuel Quickley and Burks who scored 21, 20, 18 and 18 respectively. The Knicks are still scrapping for a spot in the play-in game, but it was really their much faster start that earned them the victory today in Detroit. The Knicks are playing solid basketball as of late as they finish a road trip 3-0.

For the Pistons, they'll be in The Empire State on Tuesday night as they take on the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center. That matchup with the Nets will be a real test as they boast two of the best offensive players in the game in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. The latter will be playing just his second home game all season due to COVID restrictions that have now been lifted.
