Houston Rockets Overcome Short-Handed Memphis Grizzlies to Extend Home Winning Streak
HOUSTON — The Houston Rockets had their share of trouble against the short-handed Memphis Grizzlies. But despite their subpar play, the Rockets prevailed en route to a 117-104 victory.
The Rockets established their dominance during the first half and held a 19-point lead with 3:37 left in the second quarter. But the Grizzlies cut into the Rockets lead, which resulted in Houston holding a 57-43 lead at the half. But it wasn't until the third period that Memphis became a problem.
Behind 16 third-quarter points by Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies outscored the Rockets 38-25. And by the end of the period, the Rockets' lead dwindled to one (82-81). Jackson finished with a game-high 44 points on 15 of 24 shooting and seven rebounds.
However, the Rockets opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to keep the Grizzlies from breaking their streak inside the Toyota Center.
The Rockets bench unit scored a season-high 58 points, with Tari Eason leading the way for the second consecutive game. He came off the bench and scored 25 points and 14 rebounds. Jae'Sean Tate added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Houston's starting unit struggled most of the night, but Jabari Smith Jr. had one of his best performances of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Fred VanVleet was a non-factor until the fourth quarter, where he scored 10 of his 11 points. He also added nine assists.
Due to an illness, the Grizzlies were without Desmond Bane, their leading scorer in Ja Morant's absence. Memphis got solid production from former league MVP Derrick Rose, who scored 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting.
