PHOENIX -- The Oklahoma City Thunder will be without star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander when they host the Phoenix Suns tonight.
Gilgeous-Alexander was initially listed as doubtful due to a right quad injury. He recently tried to play through the injury but missed the team's last matchup - a loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
“He’s banged up, for sure. He’s not 100%. We’re monitoring it, but he’s certainly not a hundred percent. I’ll let him speak on it," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said earlier in the week.
Gilgeous-Alexander confirmed his coach's thoughts:
"Little banged up in my quad. Since the Utah game," he said. "Just take it day by day, see how I feel when I wake up."
Gilgeous-Alexander, considered to be an MVP candidate this season, was the only Thunder player on OKC's injury report heading into tonight, as all others listed were out due to G League assignments.
The star guard is averaging 30.4 points per night to go along with 5.6 rebounds and 6.3 assists. He also leads the NBA in steals per game with 2.1.
The Thunder are in a tight race for the West's top seed with under ten games left to play. Their 50-22 record is tied with the Minnesota Timberwolves for No. 2 - both trail the Denver Nuggets by half a game.
Suns-Thunder is set for just past a 5:00 PM Arizona time tip.
