Three Takeaways from Oklahoma City's Offensive Masterclass Versus Washington
On the closing end of a back-to-back to return from the All-Star break, Oklahoma City routed the Washington Wizards 147-106 and kept in pristine form to showcase one of the team's most dominant offensive performances this season.
In doing so, the Thunder is once again tied for the best record in the Western Conference following a Minnesota Timberwolves loss to the Milwaukee Bucks just hours later.
This marks the fourth consecutive win for Oklahoma City as the team enters a fairly tame stretch comparative to the past two months, and remain in prime position with a 39-17 record. This matchup closes the season series between the two teams, as the Thunder took each of two meetings and scored 283 combined points throughout them.
Here's three focal points from Oklahoma City's win on Friday night:
Thunder Sparks One of Finest Offensive Outings This Season
Oklahoma City has came out of the All-Star break firing on all cylinders. Coming off a strong defensive outing in a win over the Clippers the night prior, the Thunder fired things up even further on the other side of the floor on Friday night.
It began in the first half, where Oklahoma City shot 72.7% from the field through the first two frames, tying a franchise record, to score 80 points and post its most points in the first half on the season.
Through the full 48 minutes, 10 players found themselves in the double-digit scoring column and helped the team achieve a 50% shooting night from three on 40 attempts, and 59.8% from the field. Oklahoma City persists as the most efficient 3-point shooting team in the NBA, shooting just shy of 40% from distance.
The Thunder would ultimately end with 147 points, easily making it the most the team has scored in a contest this year while generating the third-largest victory margin as well.
SGA Puts Up Familiar Stat Line Through Three
It was a stat line all too familiar for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Friday night, as he led the team in scoring with 30 points. But this time he only needed three quarters to do it.
On 10-for-17 from the field, his efficiency as a scorer of his level is beginning to reach historical levels of consistency. The Thunder superstar holds the most 30-to-34-point games of all time by a three-game margin now after his performance versus Washington. The next closest players are George Gervin in 1978-79 and Michael Jordan in both 1988-89 and 1990-91.
Of course, he had to add onto his point total with seven rebounds and nine assists. Gilgeous-Alexander still holds his second-place average of 31.1 points per game on 54.7% shooting.
Holmgren Constructs 16th Career Double-Double
Chet Holmgren saw his 16th double-double in his rookie campaign from Friday night's win – turning in 25 points on 78.6% from the field with 10 rebounds, along with two blocks.
This also marked his 11th game this season with at least 20 points and two blocks, as he continues to creep toward the franchise rookie block record with just six left to claim it.
Oklahoma City's 7-foot-1 rookie has preached his mindset as a team-first competitor time after time, and his ability to produce to the benefit of the team has subsequently offered him the opportunity to put up these double-doubles. Holmgren's expiration date to register a triple-double has to be coming soon, and it seems it'll more likely stem from a double-digit block performance rather than in the assist department.
His most blocks in a game caps off at eight, while his most assists in a game caps off at seven this season.
