Browns Named as a Potential Landing Spot for Star Receiver
The Cleveland Browns have turned a few heads and caught some attention across the NFL for the elite defense it has played over the first three weeks of the season. One NFL insider believes that pursuing a disgruntled star receiver should be in the cards as the team tries to replace Nick Chubb and help out Deshaun Watson.
According to Matt Lombardo of Fanbuzz, the Browns would be a great potential landing spot for Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams. In the article, Lombardo has a list of six teams that would be a good fit for Adams.
It has been no secret that Adams hasn't been pleased with the Raiders franchise since being acquired from Green Bay prior to last season. He left the Packers to reunite with his college quarterback in Derek Carr, only to watch the team bench him and move on from him in an ugly divorce.
This year the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo to be the team's quarterback but have struggled in the first three games and if it wasn't for a one point victory over the Broncos, would be 0-3. Adams is at the end of his career and winning is important to him.
With Garoppolo now in the concussion protocol things don't appear promising and if a few more losses pile up, the receiver may want to play elsewhere. The Raiders would face a dead cap hit but also be able to save nearly $7M against this year's salary cap.
Lombardo states that in regard to the Browns, that it would be a commitment to the vertical passing game. He believes that the Browns need another receiver to form a more dynamic duo similar to other teams like Miami, Seattle and Philadelphia to be legit contenders in the AFC.
Whether or not Adams is available will be interesting to monitor but as the trade deadline approaches I would expect Andrew Berry to be aggressive if the right opportunity was to present itself on the offensive side of the ball. The team can not afford to waste a season with such a dynamic defense in place.
