Chargers News: Ben Herbert Reveals Goals For Bolts Over Offseason

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh brought strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert from Michigan to join him on his new Bolts' staff earlier this offseason. Herbert, who has officially taken the title as the Chargers' Executive Director of Player Performance, has become known for his conditioning system that helps get the most out of his players.

Bringing Herbert on the staff has been hailed as a huge addition for the Chargers, as Herbert previously helped the Michigan football team stay healthier and produce a record number of players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in 2024.

Herbert will work for an NFL team for the first time in his career, after previously coaching for Michigan, Arkansas and Wisconsin. Herbert recently broke down his goals for his new team as the Chargers began their voluntary workouts this week.

"My goal is not to break you, my goal is to make you harder to break," Herbert said, via the Chargers on X. "Goal number two, consistency. Your ability to show up every day, and repeatedly do what you are capable of doing. And then bigger, faster, stronger. I want to improve range of motion in tissue and joint, I want to give you more pressing capability, improve your acceleration. When you think of those three games ... that's how you can describe our program."

Along with these goals, Herbert specified to reporters how he plans on making his players "harder to break." This included training parts of the body that are vulnerable to injury or getting hurt in football, like the neck, traps, hamstrings and ankles.

For a Chargers team that has been plagued by injuries over the years, this kind of training could prove vital. The Chargers had many key players miss time due to injury last season, including Justin Herbert, Joey Bosa and now former Chargers Mike Williams, Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler. If the Chargers can stay healthier under Herbert, it will greatly improve their chances of winning.
