Chargers Met With Former SEC TE For Pre-Draft Visit
The Los Angeles Chargers hosted former Tennessee tight end McCallan Castles on Thursday for a pre-draft visit thirteen days before the 2024 NFL Draft. This is the second tight end who visited the Chargers on Thursday, with former TCU TE Jared Wiley also visiting the team, via NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Castles is going through the pre-draft process after playing five years of college football. He began his collegiate career as a freshman at Cal, before going up north to play for UC Davis for three seasons. For the final year of his career, Castles came to Tennessee. At Tennessee, Castles caught 22 passes for 283 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. His best statistical years came at UC Davis, where he went for over 340 yards during both his third and fourth years of college.
Wiley, who also visited the Chargers on Thursday, spent five years playing college football as well. Wiley spent his first three years at Texas before coming to TCU for his final two seasons. His last season at TCU was his best, setting career-highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns with 47 catches for 520 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Chargers appear to be planning an offense that will emphasize the tight end position. The Bolts have already made their interest in having a run game and the tight end position clear, bringing in both TEs Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst during free agency. In addition, the Chargers brought in Greg Roman as offensive coordinator, who is known for his run-game and tight-end-friendly offenses.
Roman seems to always have great tight ends in his offenses, including players like Vernon Davis and Mark Andrews. This and the visits do not mean the Chargers will draft a tight end, especially after signing two this offseason, but does reinforce the importance of the position for the new regime.
