Chargers Stand Pat, Grab Cornerstone Offensive Piece in Latest Mock Draft

The NFL draft is only a few weeks away, and many believe it will truly start with the Los Angeles Chargers' number five pick. The first four picks are sort of predictable, especially if those teams stand pat.

However, the real question mark is what the Bolts will do with their number five pick. Will they keep the pick and draft their next game-changer, or will they trade down and look for multiple first-round draft picks?

It's all a mystery right now, but the latest CBS Sports mock draft believes the Bolts will stand pat and acquire an All-American offensive tackle.

CBS Sports analysts Brady Quinn and Leger Douzable pieced together the draft's first round and believe the Bolts will draft Notre Dame left tackle Joe Alt.

Here's Quinn's reasoning for LA choosing the big guy, including a preemptive grade for the hypothetical pick.

"Alt is the consensus top offensive tackle on the board, but he's a career left tackle and Rashawn Slater is locked into that spot with the Chargers -- maybe this precipitates a move to the right side for the former first-round pick? Alt is a towering, freaky athlete. While this would fill a need for Los Angeles, I don't think Alt wins cleanly as frequently as a top-five offensive tackle should. He has to get stronger. Grade: B"

Alt is a game-changer at his position and would immediately be an impactful p[player for the Bolts in the pass-and-run game. He's genuinely a once-in-a-generation type of talent for the left tackle spot. Alt will secure the health of quarterback Justin Herbert and the backfield.

The 21-year-old towers over everyone, standing at 6-foot-9 and weighing 321 pounds. Alt possesses excellent size and is perfectly built to protect the blindside. He also has an explosive first step and refined hands and picks up on stunts and blitzes of pass-pro sets.

At the moment, it seems the Chargers can't do anything wrong with their pick. A potential choice of Alt fits the bill.
