Chargers Secondary Faces Tough Road Ahead in Upcoming Weeks

It won't get any easier after week 1's loss.

Surrendering nearly 450 yards through the air against the Dolphins, the Chargers' secondary will be tasked with covering more elite options in their next month of games.

Even after giving up nearly 300 yards combined to the speedy Miami duo of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill alone, the Bolts' defensive backs also have their work cut out for them in weeks 2-5.

Tasked with guarding some of the league's best pass catchers in their upcoming matchups, the Bolts' defense hasn't exactly encouraged fans that they'll improve after their showing in week 1.

Giving up 36 points to a Miami offense that was able to protect Tua Tagovailoa all afternoon long, even as the Chargers got two takeaways, they couldn't capitalize on multiple opportunities in their first week of action.

Most concerning among these issues was that the Bolts couldn't register a single sack against a depleted offensive line without their best blocker in former All-Pro Terron Armstead, who had to sit out due to injury.

Even with all these factors against them, the Dolphins still gashed LA through the air to the tune of three touchdowns and a bevy of penalties that also pushed the ball down the field for Tagovailoa.

Unable to get stops on third and ten or more multiple times, the former Crimson Tide legend was able to slice and dice J.C. Jackson, Michael Davis, and everyone else on the Bolts' secondary for an impressive opening showing for the Dolphins.

As Miami showed just how vulnerable the defensive backfield for the Chargers is sans Derwin James, the path to winning football starts and stops with this clear weak spot in LA's team.

With multiple All-Pro and Pro Bowl-level wideouts soon approaching on the schedule for LA, if their corners continue to struggle, it could be yet another season of frustration at SoFi, much like before.
