Chargers Make 'Non-Harbaugh' Type of Pick in New Mock Draft
What will the Los Angeles Chargers do with their number five pick in late April's 2024 NFL draft? That's the number one question all Bolts fans have. Will the Bolts stay at five or trade down and collect more picks?
It's all a mystery at the moment, and while many draft experts have different predictions for what they'll do with it, CBS Sports Jordan Dajani believes the Bolts will keep the number five pick.
LA can't go wrong with keeping it, as this draft class is loaded with talent. Multiple prospects are set to become star players once they hit the pro level.
However, Dajani thinks the Chargers will make a 'Non-Harbaugh' pick by selecting one of this class's many star wide receivers, LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers.
"Jim Harbaugh has been campaigning for a trade down in several different ways. He would like a team to trade up to his No. 5 spot for his former quarterback in J.J. McCarthy, and he has also talked up the offensive line as well. However, the Chargers don't field an offer attractive enough, so they take the receiver some believe is better than Marvin Harrison Jr. Malik Nabers recorded the most receptions (189) and receiving yards (3,003) in LSU history. Not a very "Harbaugh-like" pick, but the Chargers should upgrade the WR room."
This would be the ideal pick, considering the Bolts' wide receiver room is as empty as the Oakland Coliseum these days. However, Dajani is right; this pick would be out of the norm for Jim Harbaugh. As we know, and his track record shows, he wants to get and dominate the trenches.
Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt will be there for the taking, and so will Oregon State's Taliese Fuaga and Alabama's JC Latham.
However, the Bolts go with an elite pass catcher in this mock draft, and they can't go wrong with it. Nabers finished as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award in 2023, where he recorded 1,546 yards and finished as LSU's all-time receptions leader (186) and 14 receiving touchdowns. Nabers also holds the record for the most career receiving yards for the Tigers at 3,003, surpassing Josh Reed.
The 20-year-old would immediately be Justin Herbert's favorite target. We'll see how Harabugh and the Charger team decide on this pick.
