Chargers News: Bolts Dip In The Ringer's Latest Power Rankings After Loss
Losing their first two games of the 2023 season to begin a new year, the Chargers have looked unfortunately similar to their previous iterations through failure in their late-game execution.
Dropping both of their initial matches between the Dolphins and the Titans in equally frustrating fashion, preseason expectations have already been unmet, leading to some analysts writing LA off in the early going
This Chargers team should be much better than 0-2. All the pieces were in place this preseason, with stars on both sides of the ball and a new offensive coordinator who promised to finally unlock Justin Herbert and the team’s offense. They’re loaded to the gills with playmakers on offense, with Herbert, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler, and first-round pick Quentin Johnston. The defense features similar stars, with Joey Bosa, Derwin James, and J.C. Jackson. Head coach Brandon Staley has a defensive background, and he needs to turn this unit around quickly for the Chargers to remain in the hunt in the AFC. If he doesn’t, this team will be in the same spot most Chargers squads have found themselves: good only on paper.
Talent evaluation under current Bolts GM Tom Telesco has never been the issue, but late game execution and the tendency to give away some winnable contests have made fans frustrated to no end over the agonizing history of the team.
Whether it's been Mike McCoy, Anthony Lynn and now Brandon Staley on the sidelines, the failure to find the right man for the job on the sidelines has consistently doomed the franchise.
If Staley's seat wasn't hot after an embarrassing playoff loss last season, it has to be burning after the first two games of 2023, with the most common knocks on him as a coach still very apparent to start this year.
