Chargers News: AFC West Rival Could be Potential Trade Back Target For Bolts
The countdown is set for the 2024 NFL Draft. There are exactly 52 days till the draft, and it will be a big day for all 32 squads. So much can and will happen as we approach the draft and on draft day.
Trades are inevitable throughout the three-day draft, and there's a big chance your Los Angeles Chargers will be in the thick of it.
According to The Athletics Vic Tafur and Tashan Reed, the Chargers and their AFC West rivals, The Las Vegas Raiders, might be trade partners.
Tafur and Reed say former Chargers and current Raiders general manager Tom Telesco has talked to his old squad about trading up to the number five pick to select a quarterback.
Telesco has also had conversations centered on potentially trading for picks in the 5 to 7 range, which are owned by the Los Angeles Chargers (pick No. 5), New York Giants (No. 6) and Tennessee Titans (No. 7). That type of trade could be made to put the Raiders in range for another trade up later or a player at another premium position, but it mostly makes sense if it’s a move up for a quarterback like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.
There's no doubt that this draft is a quarterback-friendly draft. The Chargers do not need a quarterback, and it could benefit them to trade back.
However, trading back with your division rival is a bit tricky. Do the Chargers really want to help out their biggest rivals to help them select their quarterback of the future? Probably not.
Nonetheless, it is a business, and trading back may be best for the Bolts. If it happens to be with the Raiders, then so be it. This doesn't mean the Chargers will pull the trigger on a trade. There's still plenty of time for the Bolts to weigh their options, and the same goes for their division rivals.
A lot will happen as we get closer to the date, and we'll get a clear answer on what the Bolts will do with their fifth overall pick soon.
