Chargers News: Bolts OL Target Will Not Be Tagged by Patriots
One of the biggest areas of need for the Los Angeles Chargers is the offensive line. Starting center Corey Linsley will be retiring, and though Trey Pipkins III and Rashawn Slater are solid starters, more help is needed.
Many believe that the Chargers will target a starting OL with the #5 pick, or by trading back in the first round. Two targets are Notre Dame's Joe Alt and Wahington's Troy Fautanu.
Even though the team needs some great rookie talent, they will also need to hit the free-agent market for proven veterans. One of those veteran targets is current New England Patriots OL Mike Onwenu.
Onwenu will not be receiving a franchise tag from the Patriots, meaning he will be hitting the FA market. Onwenu is versatile and has played RG and RT for the Patriots.
The Chargers need an offensive lineman that can move spots, and potentially fill in should injuries occur in 2024. While we don't believe that Onwenu would play center, it could give the OL more options to try other players at that position.
The Chargers don't have much cap space to work with currently, but they can release players or restructure enough contracts to ensure that they have some wiggle room to bring in FAs like Onwenu.
