Chargers News: Ex-Bolts HC Brandon Staley Lands Interview With Nearby Rival
Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley might be on a very familiar sideline soon.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reveals that Staley is set to interview for his old job, the one that attracted the attention of Chargers owner Dean Spanos in the first place. Staley served as the defensive coordinator for one year one the Los Angeles Rams under Sean McVay, and the club won a Super Bowl that season. He is now reportedly quite intrigued in the gig once again. The Rams recently canned Raheem Morris.
Despite leading three generally horrible defenses (Khalil Mack aside, of course) as the Bolts' head coach, he is being eyed as one of the "top DCs available," per Rapoport. To be fair, part of the issue was personnel, as now-ex-Bolts general manager Tom Telesco didn't exactly equip him with the 1985 Chicago Bears on that end of the field.
Staley is slated to talk with Rams brass about the opportunity tomorrow.
As a reminder, his Chargers were so bad in their 63-21 Week 15 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15 that it cost Staley and Telesco their jobs, a rare midseason firing from the Spanos clan. How this guy can still be reasonably considered a defensive innovator is a bit of a head-scratcher to yours truly.
