Chargers News: Joe Hortiz Breaks Down Bolts Cap Room Situation

The NFL did so many teams a huge favor last week, especially the Chargers.

Last week, your Los Angeles Chargers received some well-needed news.

The league agreed that the salary cap for 2024 will be $255.4 million. That is an increase of $30.6 million from last season's cap of $224.8 million.

This jump in the salary cap will significantly benefit the Chargers, who will sit $25.6 million over the cap. The Bolts still need to make some moves this offseason to free up more space. Nonetheless, this is tremendous news for the team and general manager Joe Hortiz

Hortiz met with the media on Tuesday morning at the NFL Scouting Combine, including Chargers senior inside Eric Smith. Hortiz expressed how the salary cap increase would greatly benefit his team.

"Obviously, the salary cap got bumped up a little bit higher than I think everyone was expecting, a little bit more," Hortiz said. "It gives us, certainly, some flexibility a little bit, more increased flexibility. We'll continue to talk through that over the next couple of weeks and have a plan of attack shortly."

Hortiz also said that his job and the organization's job is to get under the cap before free agency kicks off.

"In terms of the cap, I'm confident we can get there because you have to get there," Hortiz said with a laugh. "I have no choice but to get under the cap, so I can promise you that we're going to do that."

The Charger must get under the cap by 1 p.m. PT on March 13th. The new league year starts on the same day.

The clock is ticking, and Hortiz, Jim Harbaugh, and the crew must make some moves as soon as possible.
