Chargers News: Justin Herbert Gets Candid About Disappointing 2023 Season

Herbert is confident he and the team will be better in 2024.

The Los Angeles Chargers 2023 season was far from a decent one. The Chargers were decimated with bad play, bad coaching, and injuries.

Los Angeles couldn't get anything right in 2023, resulting in the changes we've witnessed this offseason. The Chargers are now better because of it, but it's never pretty to go through it. Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert didn't finish the season but was around for the entirety of it.

The 2023 season was a tough one to swallow, especially for Herbert. In a recent appearance on the Chasin' It podcast with his former teammates Chase Daniel and Trey Wingo, the 25-year-old reflected on the season that was.

“I don’t know if I could just put it into on word. That’s kind of a tough question and I think there’s a lot that goes into a year. It’s one of those things we have to be better. We have to learn from these mistakes and sometimes you have to go through things like that to know better and to learn and to grow from that and no one wants to experience a season like that. I know that we’re going to be better because of it. The guys in that locker room are going to be tighter together, we’re going to be closer and we know what we need to fix now. Paired up with his new coaching staff these guys what we bring in, I know that we’ll be focused and dialed in for this year.”

Herbert's season was cut short after fracturing his right index finger on his throwing hand. He suffered the injury in Week 14 against the Denver Broncos and played his last snap in the second quarter of that game.

Herbert was only one of many Chargers to miss an extended period. The 2023 season was not ideal, but as Herbert said, it may have been for the better because of their poor play. These significant changes to their front office and coaching staff took place, which could be the difference for years to come.

There's no way to go but up, and that's precisely what Herbert and the Chargers want to do.
