Chargers News: Patriots Nearing Special Metric Of Awfulness This Weekend
As 5.5-point favorites on the road against the New England Patriots, the LA Chargers are in prime position to keep their season alive after a rough 4-7 start.
New England has been awful, sitting at 2-9 with consecutive single-digit scoring performances. They've now lost 7 of their last 8, and possess the league's second-worst scoring offense.
A quarterback carousel combined with horrendous receiving weapons have rendered the Patriots offense borderline unwatchable, and their poor performances week after week have left them 2-9 against the spread, which is the worst record in the league (per ESPN).
They've failed to cover the spread in 4 straight games, indicating consistently worsening performances, especially when taking into consideration the fact that they played quarterbacks Tommy DeVito and Gardner Minshew II in their last two games.
Interestingly, the Chargers have been bad against the spread too, sitting at 3-7-1. They've failed to cover each of the past two weeks by a good margin, sitting as 3-point favorites in Green Bay and losing by 3, while being 3-point underdogs at home against Baltimore and losing by 10.
This matchup can be seen as one of the harder ones to bet on this season, as while it's likely that the Bolts leave with a win, a 5.5 spread would mark the Chargers' largest victory this season excluding their wins against Tyson Bagent (Chicago Bears) and Zach Wilson (New York Jets).
Some may classify Patriots QB Bailey Zappe as being in that tier, however, strengthening the odds that the Pats fail to cover yet another spread, finding themselves with their most losses against the spread in Bill Belichick's tenure (10), with 5 more games remaining.
