Chargers News: Writer Unpacks Bolts' Running Issues

What happened to the running game?

When the Los Angeles Chargers hired offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, two things were almost certain: the LA offense would score a lot of points, and their run game would be miles better.

Through three weeks, the LA offense isn't lacking any points, averaging 28.6 points per game. And through one week, it looked like their run game would be an elite unit.

However, their run game has dipped enormously over the past two weeks. Granted, their star running back, Austin Ekeler, has missed the past two games, which has hindered their running productivity.

Ekeler's primary backups, Joshua Kelley and Isaiah Spiller, have only combined for 61 yards on 27 rushes in the past two weeks after exploding for 233 yards in Week 1.

It's not ideal for a Moore offense that thrives on the run game, but it's hard doing so without possibly your best offensive player.

There is a chance that Ekeler can make his return from injury as a high ankle sprain still hampers him for their upcoming Week 4 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders.

LA has a bye week in Week 5, so we'll see if he continues to labor it or go out there and help the running game after two bad running weeks.

No pressure, Ekeler, but it's clear LA misses their explosive back, and hopefully, he comes back sooner rather than later.
