Chargers News: Podcasters Put Onus On Bolts At This Position To Improve

One of the weakest points of their team.

Needing improvement on all fronts to climb out of an early season 0-2 hole, the Chargers have begun looking inward to see which glaring issues still exist on the talented but underwhelming roster.

To a few pundits, the answer is quite simple as the defensive backfield hasn't been up to the standard they or other fans of the team have expected thus far in 2023.

To me it starts with the secondary. They were much better than what we've seen this year, especially from a group of cornerbacks we thought would be a strength going into the season. When I'm looking at guys that have to step up or else things are continually going to go poorly for them, I'm looking at the corner. I'm looking at this secondary who's had a rough last couple of weeks.

Even though they've shelled out top dollars to both Derwin James as a homegrown talent and J.C. Jackson in free agency from last year, the secondary remains exposed to start this campaign.

Burned by Tyreek Hill and company at home during their Week 1 matchup with the Dolphins, while a staggering loss, it's understandable that the Bolts, and frankly anybody, would struggle to contain one of the best receivers in the NFL.

Less excusable is their recent loss to the Tennessee Titans as quarterback Ryan Tannehill hit two deep passes against LA's defensive backfield to Treylon Burks in the second quarter and Chris Moore in the fourth.

Both plays led to touchdown scoring drives and ultimately forced the Chargers to settle for overtime rather than earn a win had they stopped both passes.

Considering Tannehill had just come off a three interception performance the week prior in New Orleans, LA's corners must be better in the coming weeks if they want any hope of even a playoff spot due to their poor start thus far.
