Commanders vs. Cowboys: Washington Loses 25-10

The Washington Commanders (1-2) and Dallas Cowboys (2-1) face off in their first October game today at AT&T Stadium in Arlington at 1 p.m.

Today's game pits Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz, who is looking to get back to Washington's winning ways after two straight losses, against Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush, who looks to improve to 3-0 as a starter after relieving the injured Dak Prescott during the first game of the season.

The only injury the Commanders are dealing with on the active roster is Wes Schweitzer's concussion, while the rest of those sitting today are healthy scratches. But the team could be welcoming back rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. this week.

Washington won the toss and defer. Dallas gets the ball to start the game. 

Ezekiel Elliot rushes for five yards on the first offensive play of the game. Dallas goes up-tempo, but Cooper Rish is forced to throw it away. On third and five, Rush buys time in the pocket and finds a wide-open Elliot for a 31-yard gain. 

Elliot gets the ball again and only gains two yards on the carry. Dallas hands it off to Elliot once again and he only gains one yard to make it third and seven. Rush finds Tony Pollard, but he only gains a couple and is tackled by Cole Holcomb. Brett Maher attempts a 53-yard field goal and makes it. 

Cowboys 3, Commanders 0

Change of possession.

The Commanders begin the drive at their 25-yard line after the touchback. Washington keeps it on the ground with Antonio Gibson for a four-yard gain. The Commanders stay with Gibson and he rushes seven yards for a first down. 

Carson Wentz drops back for the first time and finds Gibson for a three-yard gain. Wentz finds Terry McLaurin on a screen for eight yards and another first down. 

Washington goes back to the ground, this time with Jonathan Williams to make it second and seven. A false start by Trai Turner pushes the Commanders back five yards. Washington keeps on moving in the wrong direction as Wentz gets sacked by Neville Gallimore. On third and 21, Wentz is pressured again and his pass to John Bates is incomplete. 

Tress Way's punt pins the Cowboys at their 10-yard line. 

Change of possession.

The Cowboys stay with Elliot and he rushes for five yards on first down. Rush hands it off to Elliot but he only gains two this time to make it third and three. Rush gets sacked by Jonathan Allen to force fourth down. 

Bryan Anger punts from his own end zone and Washington will start the drive from its 38-yard line. 

Change of possession.

Gibson runs it four yards on first down. A big gain on second down by Gibson is negated by a holding penalty on Nick Martin to make it second and 16. Washington keeps it on the ground, this time with JD McKissic but they only gain one yard. On third and 15, Wentz takes a deep shot to McLaurin but the pass is incomplete. The Commanders are forced to punt again and Way's punt will force Dallas to start at its nine-yard line after KaVontae Turpin loses yards on the return. 

Change of possession.

Rush's pass to CeeDee Lambs gains 23 yards on first down for the Cowboys. Rush connects with Lamb again for a 15-yard gain. Rush once again completes a pass to Lamb for a 16-yard pass. 

The Cowboys go with play-action and Rush finds Lamb again for a 17-yard gain. Dallas goes to the ground with Tony Pollard but they lose two yards. Rush's pass to Noah Brown is off target and incomplete to make it third and 12. Rush scrambles but only gains five yards. It'll be fourth and seven to start the second quarter.

Second Quarter:

The 45-yard field goal from Maher is good to extend Dallas' lead. 

Cowboys 6, Commanders 0

Change of possession.

Washington begins the drive at its 25-yard line. Wentz's pass to Gibson only gains one yard on first down. Wenz hands it off to Gibson and he gains 11 yards for a first down. 

The Commanders stay on the ground with Williams but he only gains a yard. Williams gets the ball again and finds much more success, rushing for 18 yards and a first down. 

A play-action pass takes too long to develop and Wentz is forced to run and extend the play. He throws the ball as he's hit and is flagged for intentional grounding after the pass didn't get back to the line of scrimmage. On second and 22, Gibson gains 11 yards on a screen to make it third and 11. The pass from Wentz was intended for McKissic and is incomplete. 

Way comes out to punt and Dallas will start the drive at its 16-yard line.

Change of possession.

Rush hands it off to Elliot on first down and he only gains a yard. Rush's pass goes deep and is intended for Brown but it's incomplete. Rush is forced out of the pocket on third down and his pass is incomplete. Anger's punt goes to the Commanders' 35-yard line where Dax Milne calls for a fair catch.

Change of possession.

Wentz hands it off to Gibson on first down and he gains six yards. Washington goes to the air on second down and Wentz connects with Curtis Samuel for a six-yard gain and a first down. 

The Commanders go up-tempo and Gibson only rushes for three yards. Washington stays on the ground and McKissic gains 33 yards and is tackled at Dallas' 17-yard line. 

Washington moves quickly and the pass to McLaurin gains six yards. Wentz hands it off the McKissic on second down, but he only gains a yard. On third and two, Wentz finds Jahan Dotson in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. 

Joey Slye's extra point is good and gives Washington the lead.

Commanders 7, Cowboys 6

Change of possession.

Dallas will start the drive at its 25-yard line after the touchback by Slye. Rush rolls to his right and the pass to Dalton Schultz is incomplete. Dallas goes to the ground on second down and Elliot only gains three yards to make it third and seven. Rush's pass is intercepted by Benjamin St-Juste but it's called back due to illegal contact and gives the Cowboys a first down. 

Rush hands it off to Elliot again and he only gains two yards. On second and eight, Rush's pass is batted down by Daron Payne. Rush's pass on third and eight finds Michael Gallup for a 15-yard gain and a first down. 

Rush's pass to Lamb on first down only gains three yards. On second and seven, Elliot runs for six yards. Dallas stays on the ground again and he gains seven yards for a first down. 

Pollard comes into the game for the Cowboys and runs for six yards. Pollard gets the ball again and gains three more yards. On third and two, Rush sneaks it for two yards and a first down right before the two-minute warning. 

Rush hits Brown for a 12-yard gain and a first down. A false start by Tyler Biadasz pushes Dallas back five yards. A draw play to Pollard gains nine yards. On second and six, Rush's pass to Pollard is high and incomplete. 

On third and six, Rush scrambles out of the pocket and finds Gallup in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point by Maher is blocked. 

Cowboys 12, Commanders 7

Change of possession.

Washington stays on the ground with McKissic and he only gains two yards. Wentz hits Logan Thomas for a five-yard gain to make it third and two. Thomas got out of bounds to stop the clock with 22 seconds left in the half. McKissic gains three yards to get the first down and the Commanders call a timeout with 17 seconds left. 

Wentz goes deep to Dotson but is intercepted by Trevon Diggs at Dallas' 17-yard line. 

Change of possession. 

Dallas hands it off to Elliot and he loses three yards. The Cowboys let the clock run out and it's halftime.

Halftime

Third Quarter:

Washington gets the ball to start the second half. The drive gets off to a rough start after Gibson loses two yards. Wentz drops back to pass on second down, but it's incomplete, intended for McLaurin. On third and 12, Wentz hits Samuel for a 14-yard gain and a first down. 

The Commanders go back to the ground with McKissic and he gains one yard. Wentz hands it off to McKissic again and he loses three yards this time, setting up third and 12 for the second time. Wentz's screen pass to Dotson is stopped well short of a first down. 

Way's punt goes 47 yards and Turpin calls for a fair catch at Dallas' 15-yard line. 

Change of possession.

Rush hands it off to Pollard and he's tackled by William Jackson III for a seven-yard loss. Rush drops back for a pass and it's intercepted by Kameron Curl but the St-Juste is called for defensive holding to negate the play and give Dallas a first down. 

Dallas goes back to Pollard but he's tackled for a two-yard loss by Payne. On second and 12, a screen to Pollard is blown up and Rush just throws it into the ground. Dallas calls another screen, this time for Schultz but it's also incomplete. Anger comes out to punt and Milnegains a couple of yards to bring it to Washington's 39-yard line. 

Change of possession.  

The Commanders start the drive with a pass to Thomas but he loses a yard. On second down, Wentz almost throws another interception to Diggs but the ball hits the ground and is incomplete. The play is negated by a holding penalty on Saahdiq Charles. Sam Cosmi moves early on the ensuing play for a false start to make it second and 26. 

Wentz hands it off to McKissic and he loses a yard. Wentz drops back to pass on third and 27 and his pass to Bates is incomplete. 

Way comes out to punt again and it goes out of bounds at Dallas' 38-yard-line.

Change of possession.

Dallas gets a huge play on its first play of the drive on a 45-yard pass from Rush to Brown to put them at Washington's 17-yard line. 

The Cowboys move back five yards after a false start on Schultz. Rush hands it off to Elliot and he loses a yard on the carry. Cowboys offensive guard Zach Martin rolled his ankle on the play and is helped off the field. 

Rush completes a pass to Lamb for seven yards to make it third and nine. Rush finds Brown but is stopped short of a first down. Maher comes out for a 28-yard field goal and makes it. 

Cowboys 15, Commanders 7

Change of possession.

The Commanders start the drive at their 25-yard line. Gibson only gains one on the carry. Wentz drops back and his pass to Samuel is incomplete. On third and nine, Wentz extends the play and finds Dotson down the field for a 31-yard pass and a first down.

Washington keeps moving the ball with a 23-yard run by Williams to Dallas' 19-yard line. Williams only gains two yards on the next play. Wentz goes play-action and is forced to throw it away before he's sacked. The referees consult if it's intentional grounding and eventually throw the flag to make it third and 22. 

Cosmi gets his second false start penalty of the game to make it third and 27. Wentz's screen pass to McKissic gains 10 yards and moves Washington to the Cowboys' 26 yard-line. Slye's 45-yard field goal attempt is good. 

Cowboys 15, Commanders 10

Change of possession.

Dallas begins the drive at its 25-yard line after the touchback. Elliot only gains one yard on the carry. Rush goes deep to Gallup on second down and the pass is incomplete. A flag is thrown on the play for pass interference on Jackson III. Dallas gets the ball at Washington's 35-yard line after the penalty.

Elliot gets the ball back and he runs it five yards. Dallas let the clock run out to end the third quarter. 

Fourth Quarter:

Rush finds a wide-open Lamb for a 30-yard touchdown. Maher's extra point is good.

Cowboys 22, Commanders 10

Change of possession.

Milne returns the kickoff and only gets back to Washington's 18-yard line. Wentz's pass to Samuel is complete and he jukes a couple of defenders for a 15-yard gain.

Wentz goes back to Samuel but he only gains three yards this time. Gibson gains four yards on the ground to make it third and three. Wentz hands it off again to Gibson and he's stuffed for no gain. 

Way comes out and punts it 50 yards. Turpin calls for a fair catch at Dallas' 10-yard line. 

Change of possession.

Rush hands it off to Pollard and he's tackled by Jonathan Allen for a three-yard loss. The Cowboys stay on the ground with Pollard but he only gets back to the line of scrimmage and the holding call on Schultz is declined. On third down, Rush's pass is batted by Allen. 

Anger's punt only goes 22 yards and Washington gets the ball and the Cowboys' 30 yard-line

Change of possession.

Wentz hands it off to Gibson on first down and he gains five yards. On second and five, Wentz's pass to Thomas is complete for a six-yard gain and a first down. 

Washington goes back to Gibson and he gains three yards. Dallas defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna was injured in the play.

Wentz's pass to Dotson is incomplete but a holding penalty on Anthony Brown makes it a first down for Washington. Gibson only gains one yard on first down.  Wentz drops back to pass to Samuel. Samuel leaps and catches it in the end zone but he doesn't get both feet in bounds and the pass is incomplete. On third and nine, Wentz is sacked and fumbles the ball. The fumble is recovered by the Commanders. 

Washington lines up to go for it on fourth and 15 but calls a timeout before the play is run. Wentz is under pressure again and his pass that's intended for McLaurin is deflected by Diggs in the back of the end zone.

Change of possession.

Rush goes deep to Gallup and the pass is incomplete but Jackson III is called for pass interference at the Cowboys' 43-yard line. 

Dallas goes to the ground with Elliot and he gains seven yards. Rush drops back to pass and goes deep to Lamb but the pass is deflected by Jackson III. On third and three, Elliot gets stuffed at the line of scrimmage by Jamin Davis to make it fourth down. 

Anger comes out and punts it to Washington's 10-yard line. 

Change of possession.

Washington goes to the air on first down and Wentz's pass to McKissic only gains two yards. The Commanders run the hurry up and Wentz's pass that's intended for Dyami Brown is incomplete. Wentz's pass on third down is intercepted by DaRon Bland. Dallas takes over at the Commanders' 20-yard line with 5:29 left in the game.

Change of possession.

Elliot rushes for two yards on first down. On second down, Rush's pass to Schultz is incomplete. On third and eight, Rush's pass to Jake Ferguson is a yard short of a first down. Maher comes out for a 29-yard field goal and it's good with 3:51 left in the game. 

Cowboys 25, Commanders 10

Change of possession.

The Commanders will start at their 25-yard line after the touchback. Wentz completes a short pass to McKissic for a five-yard gain. Wentz throws a six-yard pass to Thomas for a first down. 

Wentz completes another pass to Thomas but it only gains three yards. Wentz drops back and his pass to Brown is incomplete. Wentz rolls out and his pass to Bates gains five yards to make it fourth and two. On fourth and two, Wentz's pass to McLaurin is deflected again by Diggs and is incomplete. 

Change of possession.

Elliot loses three yards on first down and Washington called its second timeout of the game. Dallas goes back to Elliot and only gains a yard and the Commanders call their final timeout. Rush hands it off to Elliot once again and he only gains a yard. The clock runs down to the two-minute warning. 

Anger is out to punt on fourth and 11. His punt goes to Washington's six-yard line where Milne calls for a fair catch.

Change of possession.

Wentz's pass to Thomas on first down is incomplete. Demarcus Lawrence is penalized for a neutral zone infraction. On second and five, Wentz's pass to Brown gains six yards for a first down.

Wentz escapes pressure and runs for five yards. Wentz goes deep to Brown by the pass is incomplete. On third and five, Wentz completes a pass to Bates for a five-yard gain and a first down. 

Wentz completes another pass to Bates for eight yards and he gets out of bounds with 18 seconds left in the game. Wentz goes back to Bates and he fumbles. Bates recovers and that's the final play of the game.
