Cowboys' Mike McCarthy Reveals 'Happy Place,' Brings Play-Calling 'Edge,' Zack Martin Says

Dallas Cowboys offensive guard Zack Martin says head coach Mike McCarthy brings a certain "edge" to the offense with his play calling

The Dallas Cowboys have made a few tweaks to their roster this offseason, but perhaps the biggest change has to do with coaching.

With Kellen Moore, the Cowboys' offensive coordinator for the last four seasons, now departed, head coach Mike McCarthy has taken over play-calling duties for the offense. While the offense will look pretty similar, even with a new coordinator in Brian Schottenheimer, McCarthy is putting his own spin on it. All-Pro offensive guard Zack Martin said the fourth-year head coach brings a certain "edge" to the offense thanks to his play calling.

“It’s more of an attitude deal,” Martin said. “That’s the best way I can describe it. The plays aren’t going to change. We’re going to run our inside zone, outside zone. I think it’s just the mindset and attitude we’re going to bring and that edge I talked about.”

McCarthy's version of the offense has even earned the name "Texas Coast." The name comes from the famous West Coast offense, which McCarthy ran during his time with the Green Bay Packers. Now that he's in the Lone Star State, it only makes sense to give it a more fitting name.

“This is the ‘Texas Coast (Offense),’" quarterback Dak Prescott said. ”We just renamed that, the quarterbacks. It’s got definitely some West Coast principles, but has a little bit of what we’ve done in the past and just marrying them together with a lot of detail and maybe in a sense, a system that’s not out there."

McCarthy called the plays for the majority of his time in Green Bay, so not doing so for his first few seasons in Dallas was quite a big change. Now that he's back to calling the shots though, he seems to be enjoying the it once again.

“It’s everything that goes into preparing the game plan,” McCarthy said. “That’s the guy that gets to compete on game day with the coordinator on the other side of the field. I think it’s only natural that I’m enjoying it.”

Thursday was the final day of minicamp, meaning time off for other "natural enjoyments.'' McCarthy was asked about his get-away "happy place,'' and the old Packers coach named the resort area of "Door County, Wisconsin.'' ... a destination that puts him a comfort zone in maybe the same way he and his "Texas Coast Offense'' guys are finding comfort in his play-calling.
