The Atlanta Falcons have begun their 2023-24 campaign with a perfect 2-0 record, which should prove to go a long way in the wide-open NFC South. The Falcons have won each of their first two games at home, and will now be traveling to take on the Detroit Lions in Week 3. The Lions came up short a week ago, but this is still an uber-talented team that will surely give ATL all they can handle.

In advance of Sunday’s contest, we figured we’d lay out our Falcons vs. Lions prediction and Falcons vs. Lions player prop picks for the matchup. We made our selections at BetMGM Sportsbook, where new users are eligible for a $1,500 first-bet bonus.

Falcons vs. Lions Prediction for Sunday, 9/24

We’re going to shy away from choosing a side in this matchup and instead focus our prediction on the game total. Atlanta came into this season with major questions on offense, but they’ve put most of those to rest early on. They’ve put up 24 and 25 points, respectively, in their first two games and now get to face a Lions defense that allowed 37 points and nearly 400 yards of total offense to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

On the other side, even though the Falcons appear to have a solid unit defensively, this Detroit offense can give any defense fits. They amassed 6.5 yards per play last week and converted on over 50% of their third-down attempts. Where they hurt themselves is in the turnover department, as if they didn’t have three last week, they probably would have put up even more points than they already did with 31.

Atlanta’s offense has looked solid so far in this campaign, while Detroit’s defense still has questions to answer that carried over from last season. The Falcons boast one of the better defensive units, but they have yet to face an offense of the Lions caliber. Taking all these factors into account, our top Falcons vs. Lions prediction will side with the over 46.5 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook).

Falcons vs. Lions Player Prop Picks Highlighting Desmond Ridder & Younghoe Koo

One of Detroit’s biggest flaws on defense last year and now through the first two games of the 2023-24 season has to be containing mobile quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes scampered for 45 rushing yards in Week 1 and even the less-mobile Geno Smith had 20 rushing yards last week. QB Demond Ridder only ran once for Atlanta in Week 1 but rushed 10 times for 39 yards last week. With that being said, of all the available Falcons vs. Lions player prop picks, Ridder over 13.5 rushing yards (-120 at BetMGM) is definitely our favorite.

Another of the Falcons vs. Lions player prop picks we like for Sunday is Younghoe Koo over 1.5 extra points made (-200 at BetMGM). While this provides significantly less value than our first pick, we believe it’s almost as sure of a bet as there is. This is especially true when taking our game prediction into consideration, where we see Atlanta being able to score touchdowns against this lowly Detroit defense. The Falcons would only need to score two touchdowns in order to give Koo enough chances to cash this prop.

Falcons vs. Lions Lineups & Odds for Sunday, September 24th, 2023 via BetMGM Sportsbook

We gave you a pick for the game itself, along with some Falcons vs. Lions player prop picks. So, it’s only right to list the odds for both the matchup and those player prop markets. Available at BetMGM Sportsbook, here’s how those are shaping up:

  • Atlanta Falcons +3.5 (-120) vs. Detroit Lions -3.5 (+100)
    • Money line: Falcons (+145) vs. Lions (-175)
    • Total: Over 46.5 (-110) / Under 46.5 (-110)
  • Desmond Ridder Rushing Yards
    • Over 13.5 (-120) / Under 13.5 (-110)
  • Younghoe Koo Extra Points Made
    • Over 1.5 (-200) / Under 1.5 (+150)

With these odds, it would take a $110 wager on our Falcons vs. Lions prediction of over 46.5 (-110 at BetMGM) to earn $100 in winnings if 47 total points or more are scored. You’d earn $100 off a $120 bet on Ridder over 13.5 rushing yards if he finishes with more than that, and you’d earn $100 off a $200 bet on Koo over 1.5 extra points made if he’s able to knock through two PATs.

Falcons Injury Report Ahead of Sunday

Atlanta is actually quite fortunate in regard to their injury situations thus far. Per ESPN.com, the only Falcon showing up on this week’s injury report is rookie LB Troy Andersen. He’s progressing through concussion protocol at the moment, although it is important to note that he was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice leading up to the game.
