Another Cornerback for Giants? If this Saints Player Were Available, Sure, Why Not?
As we count down to training camp, the Giants Country editorial team went through the rosters of each of the Giants' 2023 regular-season opponents and selected a player that, if the Giants could acquire for the upcoming season, they absolutely should.
Who did we pick from each team? Stay tuned--and yes, for the NFC East teams, we picked two players since the Giants play them twice.
Marshon Lattimore, Cornerback
Height: 6-foot-0 | Weight: 192 lbs.
College: Ohio State| Exp: 6
Career Stats: GP: 80 / GS: 80. 327 tackles (265 solo), 78 passes defended, 14 interceptions.
If the New York Giants could "steal" a player from the New Orleans Saints, their Week 15 opponent, they might want to look on the defensive side of the ball at cornerback Marshon Lattimore.
Lattimore was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2017 when he had 52 combined tackles and five interceptions. He is also a four-time Pro Bowler with a 57.6 reception percentage over 5,217 career defensive snaps.
Despite missing ten games last season due to a lacerated kidney, Lattimore still performed at a high level in the seven games he did play, coming away with 29 combined tackles, four passes defended, and a pick-six against the Eagles in Week 17.
It’s hard to find a cornerback that can do it all in coverage and consistently so from season to season in the NFL. Cornerbacks have big seasons all the time, but how many produce at a high level every season? The Giants hope that their first-round pick, Deonte Banks, will be among those that do. But how could a team pass on that if an opportunity came to add a player of Lattimore's caliber?
More "Steal a Player" Picks
Week 1: Micah Parsons | Week 2: Budda Baker | Week 3: Fred Warner | Week 4: Tariq Woolen | Week 5: Tyreek Hill | Week 6: Stefon Diggs | Week 7: Terry McLaurin | Week 8: Garrett Wilson | Week 9: DE Maxx Crosby | Week 10: WR CeeDee Lamb | Week 11: P Tress Way | Week 12: RB Rhamondre Stevenson | Week 13: Bye | Week 14: CB Jaire Alexander
Where Would He Fit In?
If the Giants had Lattimore in their ranks, he would be an immediate starter and probably their CB1. Although Adoree' Jackson is still a good player, he is coming up on the final year of his contract, and there is some question as to whether he'll be extended beyond this year.
Lattimore’s tenacious and efficient play would land him the CB1 spot, and potentially, the Giants could work Banks into the mix without the pressures of him needing to start on Day 1.
Banks is the future at cornerback for the Giants, who will probably remake the position further again next year. Having a player like Lattimore in the lineup would certainly go a long way toward potentially renovating the position, especially against the receivers the Giants regularly face in the division.
