Are New York Giants Looking to Make a Big Draft-day Trade?
If there is one thing we have learned thus far about New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen in his short time on the job, it’s that he’s not afraid to move up and down the draft board to go after the players he wants.
So it’s no surprise that Schoen is, according to the New York Post, reportedly contemplating moving out of the No. 25 spot overall to potentially move up for a pick he has his eye on should that pick fall.
“I'd be open to any of that,” Schoen said last week when asked his position of trading up, even if it meant parting with future picks. “I'm never going to rule it out. If it's the right player and the value aligns, I'd move up. If it was a future pick, I would do that, too.”
The Giants' roster is in much better shape this year than when Schoen inherited it. Last year he added to his draft haul by moving down a couple of times to add additional depth pieces since he was hamstrung in free agency thanks to a bad cap situation.
This year, however, Schoen had a much better cap situation that allowed him to add players like receiver Parris Campbell, linebacker Bobby Okereke and defensive linemen Rakeem Nunez-Roches and A’Shawn Robinson, among others.
He also acquired veteran tight end Darren Waller from the Raiders via a trade, sending the 100th overall pick for the play-maker.
Those moves, plus re-signing some of his own free agents, have drained the available cap space to where Schoen might not be able to afford all ten of his draft pick, especially since it appears on paper the Giants have much better depth at certain spots where they previously lacked, such as linebacker, tight end, and defensive line.
But there are still quite a few holes for Schoen to address if he desires to close the gaps with Philadelphia and Dallas. Those include defensive back, center, and X- receiver.
“It's a good group of receivers draft the top of the draft, depending how you have them ranked,” Schoen said, perhaps offering a clue into what he might be eyeing if a trade does happen.
“Everybody's got different strengths and weaknesses, and again I think there's a lot of talented players in the draft.”
If the top receivers in this draft class—many experts have those as Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Ohio State), Quentin Johnston (TCU), and Jordan Addison (USC), are gone early, the Giants could also look to swing a trade for an established veteran willing to rework his contract, such as DeAndre Hopkins of the Cardinals.
We'll find out soon enough if that's indeed the plan.
