Giants to Be Significantly Short-handed Thursday Night on Offense

No one was giving the Giants much of a chance to upset the New England Patriots Thursday night to begin with, but with four key offensive skill position players declared out of the game, the Giants really have themselves an uphill battle.

The Giants were holding out hope that their ever-expanding injured list might decrease in time to play the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football tomorrow at Gillette Stadium.

No such luck.

Running backs Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion), wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion) and tight end Evan Engram (knee) have been ruled out for tomorrow night’s game.

Linebacker Lorenzo Carter is questionable.

Gallman, Shepard, and Engram did not practice while Barkley and Carter were limited.

Through just five games this season, Engram, who has 33 receptions for 373 yards, was on pace for a career year.

In his absence, tight ends Rhett Ellison, Garrett Dickerson and Kaden Smith are next on the depth chart behind Engram and could see some additional playing time tomorrow. In his eight-year career, Ellison has 107 receptions for 1,068 yards.

In his four games played this season, Shepard has 25 receptions for 267 yards with one touchdown.

With the injury to Shepard, the Giants will look to veteran wide receiver Golden Tate, who only just returned to the Giants last week after serving his suspension. Tate had three catches for 13 yards against the Vikings.

Barkley has been working aggressively to return as quickly as possible from his ankle injury, but he will still not be ready by tomorrow.

With the added injury to the running back position in Gallman, fullback Eli Penny could see increased time at the position. Penny recorded 15 yards on three carries Sunday.

In his three-year career, Penny has 46 attempts for 179 yards with 13 receptions and 97 receiving yards.

Linebackers Tae Davis (concussion), Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and Josia Tauaefa (knee) are set to play against the Patriots as is left tackle Nate Solder (ankle).
