Is it a Must for the Panthers to Draft a WR in the Second Round?
The receiver room needs help, but Dan Morgan can afford to be patient if he chooses.
Later this month, the Carolina Panthers will add a wide receiver to the mix during the NFL Draft. Everyone expects that player to be selected with one of the two second-round picks the Panthers currently own at No. 33 or 39.
There are several prospects that make a ton of sense at either of those spots including Keon Coleman (Florida State), Xavier Legette (South Carolina), Ladd McConkey (Georgia), Xavier Worthy (Texas), Adonai Mitchell (Texas), and perhaps Troy Franklin (Oregon). There's also a bunch of talented pass catchers behind them which gives the Panthers the option to be patient if the board falls a certain way.
“No matter how many picks we have, we’re looking to add impact players at every position. We’re looking to add depth, we want to build competition on this roster," said Carolina GM Dan Morgan. "But the 33rd pick, that doesn’t mean we can’t do that. So I think all options are on the table. I think it will be best player available. I think if all things are equal, then we’ll go with the need.”
Taking the best player available is the only way to go for a team in Carolina's position, in my opinion. This isn't a roster that's one dynamic receiver away from being thrown around as a true contender in the NFC. To get to that level, you just have to find ways to add really good football players. It's that simple. You don't want to force something because you're attempting to address a need. That's how you get in trouble.
Fortunately for Carolina, this is an extremely deep receiver class. There will be options in the middle rounds that can play way above their draft position such as Malachi Corley (Western Kentucky), Javon Baker (UCF), Ja'Lynn Polk (Washington), Ricky Pearsall (Florida), and several others.
In all likelihood, the Panthers will select a receiver with one of those first two picks but if they don't, there's no need to freak out. Let the draft play out and evaluate the picks at the end of day three.
