Patriots Among NFL's Best In QB Stability Rankings (Thanks, Tom Brady)
No quarterback? Big problems. The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and it's no secret that the best teams tend to be led by the best quarterbacks.
Cough ... Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes ... Cough. Even better for a franchise is to have long-term stability under center.
According to new rankings by CBS Sports, the New England Patriots are tied as the NFL's second-best team in quarterback turnover rankings over the last decade.
The Patriots have had only three starting quarterbacks since the start of the 2013 season, which was tied for the second-lowest among the NFL. To qualify for this list a quarterback had to start at least four games in a season for a team. Tom Brady, Cam Newton and Mac Jones are the starting three.
In 2022 Jones suffered an ankle injury, lost his starting job to rookie Bailey Zappe, threw several temper tantrums on the field, was accused of being a "dirty" player by his peers and ultimately threw only 14 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. In other words, what have you done for me lately?
Jones is getting a "clean slate" by new offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien after regressing last season. At OTAs in Foxboro, Jones was sharp with some impressive highlights to tight end Hunter Henry. New England added a weapon this offseason in free-agent receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Leading the league in quarterback stability is the Chiefs with only two starting quarterbacks in 10 seasons (Mahomes, Alex Smith.) The reigning Super Bowl Champions are favorites to again win the Lombardi Trophy with Mahomes on a 10-year lucrative contract.
Other teams with the most stable rankings have been buoyed by long-time franchise quarterbacks, like Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Matthew Stafford (Lions), Eli Manning (Giants), Derek Carr (Raiders) and Philip Rivers (Chargers).
All in all, New England hopes to continue its security and dependability at quarterback with Jones.
